Episode 227: Viola Cheptoo Lagat

 

           ⁠ Viola Cheptoo Lagat is a middle-distance runner from Kenya who competed in the 2016 summer Olympic games. Viola has gone on to help found Tirop's Angels, which is an organization that seeks to bring awareness and fight against gender-based violence, especially in Kenya. The organization was founded in honor of the famous Kenyan runner, Agnes Tirop, who was found stabbed to death in her home in 2021. Her husband is on trial as the prime suspect. Viola talked with me about femicide in Kenya, her work in the organization, and the hope she has for the future of African women.

Episode 223: Miriam Stockley

 

           ⁠ ⁠Miriam Stockley has been singing ever since she was a child in South Africa. She went on to become a backing singer for several prominent artists such as Tina Turner, Queen, and Elton John. She recorded the famous Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary album with Karl Jenkins and Mike Ratledge, which ended up being the last album that Princess Diana purchased before her death. Miriam was one of the artists to sing at Princess Diana's tribute concert at Althorpe House in June 1998. Additionally, Miriam Stockley's rendition of "Perfect Day" continues to be a soothing balm to the soul since she sang it in the 90s as the theme song for BBC's "The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends." Miriam sat down and talked with me about her life, the healing power of music, and how she sees the world.

Episode 222: Jorden Halvorsen

 

           ⁠ ⁠Jorden Halvorsen is a four-time world champion female bull rider with a passion to give women an opportunity to enjoy bull riding and succeed in the sport. She founded "The Elite Lady Bull Riders" to provide an avenue for women to try their hand and/or compete in bull riding. Jorden sat down with me to share what she loves about bull riding, her nearly fatal injury in 2020, and how she is trying to bring women back into the bull riding arena in a way that acknowledges their physical limitations but still allows them to live to the fullest that eight seconds on a bucking bull.

Episode 221: Lisa Purtue

 

           ⁠ ⁠Lisa Purtue published a memoir last year entitled, Five Minutes to Count, which details her experiences as a female correctional officer in some of the toughest prison facilities. She has asked that the state in which these facilities are located not be named due to her negative eyewitness accounts. Lisa sat down with me on the podcast and shared several of these experiences and her impressions. She is now a clinical abuse counselor and continues to share a message of empathy even for those behind bars.

Episode 218: Cork Graham

 

           ⁠ Cork Graham's memoir, The Bamboo Chest: An Adventure in Healing the Trauma of War, recounts his experiences as a POW in a Vietnamese political prison where he was tortured and interrogated for almost a year before being released. Cork went on to serve the U.S. government as a paramilitary operations officer during the Central American civil wars, and then later became a substance abuse counselor to help fellow ex-military men suffering from PTSD. Cork sat down with me to share his experiences of war, his journey of PTSD healing, and his thoughts on our world's current hostile climate.

           ⁠ James Norbury made almost a month-long trip on foot from the Lord of the Rings film set of Hobbiton to the location used for Mount Doom. Dressed as hobbits carrying the replica of the one ring, James (dressed as Frodo) and his friend, Alex (Sam), traversed New Zealand's North Island mimicking the journey of the Tolkien hobbits. 310 miles later, James is on the podcast to share his thoughts on the famous trilogy, the story of his quest (which includes a crazy incident on Mount Doom), and his take aways from the experience.

           ⁠ Mark Lee is a talented Australian actor who has performed several television, film, and theatre roles. He is famously known for starring in the Peter Weir 1981 film, Gallipoli, which tells the story of two young Australians (played by Mark Lee and Mel Gibson) who take part in the Gallipoli campaign during WWI. It is a very impactful film, and I have never forgotten the ending scene since seeing it as a teenager.            Dr. Leah Kaylor works for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a licensed clinical psychologist. She is certified in EMDR and Brainspotting, and regularly conducts psychological assessments, particularly of trauma victims. Episode 194: Pedro Eustache

 

           ​Pedro Eustache will forever be one of the most engaging and interesting interviewees I have ever had. I saw Pedro live at a Hans Zimmer concert in February and was blown away by his musical versatility and his continual pointing upward as the audience applauded. Pedro plays nearly 600 woodwind instruments, many of which he has invented. He is also a composer and has been featured on several film soundtracks such as The Passion of the Christ and the Dune movies. He tours regularly with Hans Zimmer around the world and took the time to sit down with me before the beginning of the next tour cycle. He loves music, and he loves Jesus Christ.

Episode 193: Laura Whitehorn

 

Political activist and former political prisoner

           ​Laura Whitehorn served approximately fourteen years in prison before being released on parole for her involvement in several politically motivated bombings, including that of the U.S. Senate building in 1983. She was part of several activist groups, some of which included May 19th and the Weather Underground, before and after her time in prison to protest against what she saw as America's loss of care for humanity in its wars and political institutions. I sat down with Laura to hear her story and perspective. She is a co-founder and active volunteer with the organization, Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP)

He wrote and illustrated his memoir, Stitches, which became a New York Times bestseller as well as a National Book Award Finalist. Former actress

           ​ Season Hubley appeared in several TV shows as well as films in the late 1970s through 90's. Some of her prominent roles include Angelique in the TV series All My Children, Niki in the film Hardcore, and Priscilla Presley in the film Elvis. She made a guest appearance in an episode of The Partridge Family as Princess Jennie, which is how I was introduced to her acting. Season talked with me about her love of animals, her experience of grief, and working in the entertainment industry.

           ​ Christina Perri's song, "A Thousand Years," has been a hit romance melody for as long as I can remember. Christina has become a mother of two beautiful daughters over the years, and she now knows the deep and lasting love of being a mom. It is a book that expresses a mother's love and gives a new dimension to the song.
